VPN usage and vendor site access
Yeah, I've run into this issue more times than I can count. The most common symptom? The vendor site either times out, throws a Cloudflare or DDoS-Guard challenge that just loops endlessly, or straight-up refuses the connection. Sometimes you'll even get a "403 Forbidden" or a blank page. That's almost always the exit node IP being flagged.
First thing to do is check what IP your VPN's actually giving you. Quick visit to whatismyip.com or similar will confirm. If that IP comes back as a known datacenter range — especially if it's a popular VPN provider — it's likely already on a blocklist. Another telltale sign: you can load the site without the VPN, but the moment you turn it on, it breaks.
The fix in most cases? Just switch to a different server location within the same VPN provider. Stick to servers that aren't heavily used by people doing this kind of stuff. Avoid common "exit" countries like the Netherlands or Luxembourg for vendor sites — they get burned fast. Sometimes even switching from UDP to TCP or using an obfuscated server can get you through if the IP isn't the problem but rather deep packet inspection by the site's CDN.
For prevention, keep a shortlist of 3-5 server locations that consistently work for you. Don't just grab the "fastest" or "recommended" server. Also, consider running a DNS leak test after connecting — if your VPN is leaking your real ISP DNS, some sites will still see your actual location despite the VPN IP. And honestly, avoid free VPNs entirely for this; free exit nodes are recycled and blacklisted constantly. A dedicated residential proxy or a SOCKS5 from a smaller provider tends to hold up longer, but that's a whole different setup.
The process of elimination approach here is right. Rule out VPN first since it is the most common variable.
Using a VPN for vendor communication is sensible. Just know it can occasionally cause access issues.
Using a VPN when accessing vendor sites is reasonable privacy practice. However some vendor sites block certain VPN exit nodes due to bot or fraud prevention. If you have access issues, try different VPN servers or temporarily disable to confirm if VPN is the cause.
