Washington state driver's license features
Yeah, teaching someone the fingernail trick on the DOB ridges is what finally made it click for me. One thing I'd add — hit it with an actual PDF417 scanner rather than eyeballing it. A cheap UV light will often show UV bleeds or texture lines along the perforation edge, but those tell you something's there, not that it's correct.
Yeah the tactile laser engraving on the DOB is probably the easiest check to teach someone new. I've found a cheap 365nm UV light pulls the ghost image way better than the 395nm keychain ones everyone grabs, though even with the right wavelength some fakes have UV bleeds that look a little too soft. Honestly none of it matters if it doesn't pass scan at a PDF417 scanner, so that's my first stop before I bother with the fancy stuff.
WA licenses have the ghost image on the right and a laser perforation of the state outline you can feel. The big tell for me is the tactile laser engraving on the DOB — you should feel ridges if you run a fingernail over it. I've also seen lazy holograms that don't shift correctly under a 365nm UV light. At the end of the day what matters is whether it passes scan at a bar or bank.
Ordered a Washington card after seeing it recommended in several threads. Here is my examination of the current design with comparisons against the genuine license I sourced for reference.
Current design generation
Washington state introduced a redesigned license in 2020 that uses a polycarbonate construction with laser engraving for the cardholder photo and personalization data. The design features a mountain range silhouette across the lower portion of the card, with the state name and mountain imagery in muted greens and blues. The color scheme is distinctive and immediately recognizable compared to the plain white backgrounds of older state designs.
Holographic overlay
The overlay covers the full card face with an optically variable device that includes a repeating state seal element and the word "Washington" in small text. Under angle testing, the color shift transitions from gold to green cleanly. The vendor card I received reproduced this overlay with correct color shift direction and roughly correct color range, though the transition point was at a slightly different angle than the genuine card.
UV features
Under 365nm UV, Washington licenses show a background pattern and a ghost image of the cardholder below the main photo. The ghost image was correctly positioned on the vendor card but slightly larger than on the genuine card — a common sizing error in ghost image implementation.
Overall assessment
The vendor card I received was a competent reproduction of the Washington design with two minor quality gaps: hologram shift angle offset and ghost image sizing. For casual inspection at a venue, neither issue would be apparent. For detailed examination against a genuine card, both are visible. Washington is not the most commonly produced state and the template quality varies more across vendors than for higher-production states like California or New York. If ordering a Washington card, asking specifically about recent production quality and hologram source is worthwhile.
