What to do if your prop arrives damaged

Got a card with a visible scratch on the hologram overlay. Documented with photos, messaged vendor with clear description of the issue. They responded same day and offered a replacement. Quick guide below on how to handle this.

Man, that's a bummer. I had something similar happen and it's all about how the vendor handles it. Good customer service responsiveness makes or breaks the experience IMO.

I've always had a legit vendor come through on issues if the packaging was just weak. The stealth packaging on mine was solid, but the item still took a hit. Glad yours got sorted—once you see the vendor came through on a fix, it's way less stressful.

Yeah, the vendor communication you got sounds solid. I've had a package show up with a busted corner before, and it's a bummer when the stealth packaging does its job but the internal padding doesn't. Definitely agrees with what you said—always take pics before you even touch it. I pretty much pulled the trigger on mine based on turnaround time too, so it's reassuring to hear the vendor came through on the resolution side. Good to know who's quick to react when things go wrong.

Same day response is impressive. Good vendor behavior.

Does the scratch affect functionality or is it cosmetic?

Good writeup. Most people do not know their options when something arrives wrong.

So I just had my first experience with a prop arriving damaged, and I figured I'd share what I did in case it helps anyone else. I ordered a while back—standard turnaround, took about 12 days from payment to door. Packaging was a plain brown box with no outward markings, which I appreciate for stealth. Inside they used bubble wrap and some newspaper padding, but honestly it wasn't enough for a fragile piece. The corner of the prop got crushed during transit, and there was a visible crack on the laminate.

As soon as I opened it and saw the damage, I grabbed my phone and took a ton of photos. I'm talking the outer box from every angle, the inner packaging as I pulled it out, the prop itself with the damage clearly visible, and a close-up of the crack. I also filmed a quick unboxing video just to be safe. Honestly, that's the key—without immediate documentation, vendors are way less likely to help. Then I reached out to the vendor through their contact form with a clear description and all the attachments.

Communication was pretty solid—they got back to me within about 6 hours asking for the same photos I'd already sent, so at least I had them ready. They offered a partial refund or a replacement if I sent the damaged one back, which was fair. I went with the partial refund since I could fix the crack myself, and it saved the hassle of shipping it back. Turnaround on the refund was about 3 days after they confirmed the photos.

Overall I'd give this vendor a Value for Money rating of 7/10. The prop itself looked great aside from the damage, and the price was reasonable, but the packaging clearly wasn't robust enough for a longer trip through the mail. If you're ordering anything delicate, I'd recommend asking the vendor to double up on bubble wrap or put it in a smaller box with more padding. On the plus side, the stealth packaging was great, they communicated quickly, and they actually offered a resolution instead of ghosting. Downside: insufficient protection for fragile items, and I ended up having to do the repair work myself.

The takeaway? Photos really are everything. Document everything the second you open the package, don't touch anything until you've got clear pictures, and contact the vendor right away with everything attached. Most reputable sellers will make it right if you have the proof. Just don't wait—once you handle the item or toss the box, you lose your case.
