Why my package tracking link returns a 404 error details

Tracking link 404 errors are one of the more confusing problems that come up after ordering, because "page not found" looks like something is wrong with the order when it usually isn't. I've encountered this three times across different shipping carriers and each time the cause was different.

The most common cause: the tracking number is real but the carrier's tracking system hasn't processed the first scan yet. When a vendor prints a shipping label, the tracking number is generated and the label is valid, but the carrier's database doesn't have any record of the package until it physically passes through a scan point. If you get the shipping notification and click the tracking link immediately, you'll often see a 404 because the tracking page exists but has no data to display yet. Waiting 24 hours after the shipping notification usually resolves this.

The second cause: the tracking link format is wrong even though the tracking number is correct. Some vendor shipping notification emails build the tracking URL from a template, and if they switch carriers or change their URL structure, the link breaks while the tracking number itself remains valid. Copy the tracking number out of the email and enter it manually on the carrier's official tracking page — if it works there but not from the email link, the link construction is broken, not the tracking.

The third cause, which I encountered once: the package was shipped using a carrier consolidator whose tracking page has a shorter lifespan than the transit period. Consolidators aggregate packages and hand them to major carriers partway through the route. The consolidator's tracking link stops returning results once they've handed the package off, even though the package is still in transit. In this case, the tracking number the vendor provided eventually became active on the major carrier's own tracking system about four days after the consolidator's link went 404. I found this by running the same tracking number on USPS, UPS, and DHL in sequence until one of them returned results.

If a 404 persists for more than 48 hours after your shipping notification and you've confirmed the tracking number is correct, it's worth a brief message to the vendor asking which specific carrier and service your package is on, since the tracking behavior sometimes requires knowing the right tracking system to query.
