Anonymous browsing habits when ordering

The ordering session itself creates data in multiple places — your browser history, your ISP logs, the vendor's server logs, and potentially advertising trackers embedded in vendor sites. Cleaning up that trail is a different task from the payment privacy question, and worth thinking through separately.

Browser isolation

The simplest approach is using a browser in private/incognito mode for the ordering session only. This prevents local history retention and clears session cookies after the window closes. It does not hide your activity from your ISP or from the vendor's server, but it prevents casual local discovery.

A stronger approach is using a dedicated browser profile that is never used for anything else. Firefox supports multiple profiles natively. A profile used only for these sessions, with no other browsing history, isolates the activity completely from your main browsing identity.

VPN considerations

A VPN hides your real IP from the vendor's server but transfers that knowledge to the VPN provider instead. Choose a VPN that does not keep connection logs — and verify this claim through third-party audits rather than just marketing language. Mullvad and ProtonVPN both have audit records. Choose a server in a country with less aggressive data retention requirements.

Do not use a free VPN. Free VPN services generate revenue by selling connection data, which is the opposite of what you want here.

Tor browser

Tor routes your connection through three relays, making origin tracing significantly harder than a VPN. The tradeoffs: much slower browsing speed, and some vendor sites block Tor exit nodes as an anti-fraud measure. If a vendor site consistently fails to load over Tor, a VPN is the practical fallback.

For the specific activity of placing an order on a vendor site, the practical threat model for most people does not require Tor-level anonymity. A VPN on a reputable no-logs provider, in a private browser session, is sufficient for most situations. Tor matters more if your situation involves elevated risk that most buyers do not face.

I've never paid with anything traceable, honestly. Bitcoin transaction ID is the only receipt I keep, and that's it. I'd never touch Zelle for this stuff — too many paper trails. Anyone using an escrow service for a group buy has way more patience than me. Just remember don't use Coinbase if you're hoping to stay low key.
