Atomic swaps came up in a payment discussion and I wanted to explain what they actually are, because the term is often used without a clear explanation of the mechanism or when it is actually useful.
What an atomic swap is
An atomic swap is a trustless exchange of one cryptocurrency for another between two parties, without any intermediary. It uses hash time-locked contracts on both blockchains simultaneously — the transaction either completes on both chains at once or fails completely on both chains. There is no way for one party to receive their coins while the other does not.
The "atomic" in the name means the swap is indivisible — it either fully executes or does not execute at all. This eliminates the counterparty risk that exists in centralized exchange swaps, where you send coins to an exchange and trust them to send you the other coins in return.
Privacy implications
An atomic swap between Bitcoin and Monero is one of the more privacy-preserving ways to convert BTC to XMR. It does not require a centralized service that logs the swap, and the on-chain footprint is a Bitcoin transaction whose destination is the swap contract rather than an exchange hot wallet. After the swap, you hold Monero with no exchange history connecting it to your original Bitcoin.
Practical availability
Bitcoin-Monero atomic swaps are supported by the COMIT network and the Unstoppable Swap tool. Setup is more technical than using FixedFloat or SideShift — you need to run a local node or connect to a trusted one. For privacy-conscious users comfortable with the setup, it is the cleanest available method for converting BTC to XMR. For most users, a non-custodial instant exchange service achieves similar practical privacy with less complexity.
The user experience difference between atomic swaps and instant exchange services is currently significant. Atomic swap interfaces require more technical setup and are slower than the 60-second swap process on services like Trocador or Majestic Bank. For buyers whose primary goal is obtaining Monero without a KYC account, the non-custodial exchange route achieves the same practical outcome with a simpler workflow than a full atomic swap implementation.
