Binance vs Kraken for buying Monero
Honestly, for Monero I’d skip both and look for a P2P option with escrow service safety, especially if you care about privacy. Kraken’s been solid for me but the KYC is annoying. If you do go the exchange route, pay with BTC or Litecoin—realized those litecoin network fees are way cheaper than a Western Union transfer, ha. Just track everything with a bitcoin transaction ID and you’re fine. Whatever you do, don’t use Coinbase for XMR; they’ve got nothing.

Both exchanges are commonly used to purchase Monero. My experience with both is different enough to be worth comparing.
Kraken
Kraken lists XMR directly and allows withdrawal to external wallets with relatively minimal friction. The verification tiers are lower than some exchanges for small purchase amounts — basic verification allows purchases up to a few thousand dollars monthly. Kraken's trading interface is functional and the fee structure is transparent.
The main limitation: Kraken requires KYC verification (name, date of birth, photo ID) even at the lowest tier. This creates a direct link between your verified identity and your XMR purchase. If you are using Monero for privacy, buying it from a KYC exchange connects your identity to the purchase amount and timing.
Binance
Binance US also lists XMR but has been through a turbulent period with US regulatory issues. Their withdrawal procedures and verification requirements have changed multiple times. I have had orders delayed at the withdrawal stage on Binance when their compliance procedures flagged XMR withdrawal requests. This is an operational risk that Kraken has not presented to me.
The non-KYC alternative
For purchases where the KYC link is a concern, LocalMonero (peer-to-peer Monero exchange) allows purchase with various payment methods without centralized KYC. The liquidity is lower than major exchanges and premiums above spot price are common, but the privacy properties are better. For amounts under $500, LocalMonero is a viable privacy-respecting alternative to either exchange.
Both Binance and Kraken require identity verification at withdrawal thresholds that make them unsuitable for privacy-conscious transactions above a certain amount. For smaller Monero purchases where privacy is the goal, LocalMonero — which connects buyers and sellers for cash, bank transfer, or other payment methods — avoids the exchange account creation entirely. The peer-to-peer premium over exchange prices is typically 2–5%, which is modest compared to the privacy benefit of never creating an exchange record.
