Used Bisq for the first time last fall to buy Monero without going through a KYC exchange. The experience was educational. Here's what it's actually like compared to what the documentation suggests.
What Bisq is
Bisq is a peer-to-peer Bitcoin exchange that runs as a desktop application rather than a website. Trades happen directly between users with Bitcoin held in a multisig escrow during the trade. No account creation, no identity verification, no centralized server that can be shut down. This is the genuine no-KYC setup that privacy-focused buyers want.
The reality of using it
The interface is functional but dated. Getting the application running and connected to the Bitcoin network took about 30 minutes the first time. The trade discovery — finding someone selling what you want to buy — is slower than a centralized exchange because there are fewer active offers at any given time. I waited two days for a favorable offer to appear at the price I wanted.
Trade execution is slow by design. The multisig escrow requires blockchain confirmations before the trade proceeds, and the seller needs to confirm receipt of payment before releasing Bitcoin. My total trade took about 4 hours from initiating to receiving BTC in my wallet. That's dramatically longer than any centralized exchange.
Fees
Bisq charges a small trade fee paid in BSQ (Bisq's own token) or Bitcoin. The fee is a percentage of the trade and is competitive with centralized exchange fees. The more significant cost is the time investment in learning the system and waiting for trades.
Is it worth it?
For buyers who need no-KYC acquisition and are willing to invest time in the setup and trade waiting period, yes. For someone who needs crypto quickly for an order, centralized exchanges or ATMs are faster. Bisq is a tool for building a privacy-forward crypto acquisition habit, not for urgent payments.
