Bitcoin ATMs allow cash-to-Bitcoin conversion without bank account involvement. Combined with a BTC-to-XMR swap, this creates a path from physical cash to Monero without any KYC step. Here's how it works in practice.
Step 1: Bitcoin ATM purchase
Bitcoin ATMs exist in thousands of locations — convenience stores, grocery stores, check cashing centers. Most allow small purchases ($50-500) with just a phone number for verification, no ID. Some require ID for purchases over certain thresholds (commonly $900, sometimes lower). Use a machine that accepts your cash amount without ID requirements.
The ATM will ask for a Bitcoin wallet address to send the purchased BTC to. Use a freshly generated address in a wallet you control. The ATM charges a fee — typically 8-15% — which is the privacy premium. The BTC arrives in your wallet within 10-60 minutes after purchase.
Step 2: BTC to XMR swap
Once the BTC arrives in your wallet, use a non-KYC swap service (SideShift, FixedFloat, or similar) to convert it to Monero. You provide your Monero wallet address as the destination and the service's Bitcoin address as the send-to. The swap typically completes in 10-30 minutes.
The swap fee is usually 0.5-1.5%. Combined with the ATM fee, your total friction is roughly 10-17% above spot price. This is the cost of the privacy path.
Practical notes
ATM receipt handling: some machines print receipts with wallet addresses and transaction details. If you take a receipt, dispose of it securely. If you don't take a receipt, the machine may log the session anyway, but the transaction still goes to your anonymous wallet address.
The Monero you receive through this path has no KYC link anywhere in the chain — the ATM received cash, the Bitcoin was never attached to your name, and Monero has no public transaction history. For anyone who values that property, the cost premium is worth it.
