Bitcoin fees are killing me - any alternatives?
Man, I feel you on the BTC fees. I've watched my transaction sit unconfirmed for hours while the miner fee was already like $8. And it only gets worse when the mempool backs up. That's why I switched to Litecoin too. LTC fees are almost always under a buck, usually a few cents if you use a SegWit address. Confirmations fly by in minutes instead of hours. Most of the bigger vendors have caught on and accept LTC now, so you're not losing out on selection.
One tip I picked up along the way: always check the current network fee rate before you send. Some wallets auto-set a crazy high fee for speed, but honestly, for LTC you can often get away with the minimum and it'll still clear in 10-15 minutes. Avoid paying for "priority" or "instant" confirmations — that's just a markup. Also, if you're buying LTC from an exchange, watch out for hidden withdrawal fees. A lot of exchanges charge a flat fee (sometimes $0.01–$0.50) on top of the network fee, so compare a few before you move your coin.
On the escrow side, don't get sloppy just because you're using a cheaper coin. Always use an escrow service, and double-check the transaction terms. Some vendors will try to push you toward paying directly without escrow for a "discount," but that's a huge red flag. And watch out for "convenience fees" at checkout — a few vendors add a surcharge when you pick LTC over BTC, even though their processing cost is lower. That's just a hidden fee in disguise.
Pricing-wise, BTC fees can easily hit $10–$30 during a rush, while LTC stays under $0.50 most days. For smaller orders that difference really adds up. Combine that with fast confirmations and broad vendor acceptance, and LTC is a no-brainer. I've been running on pure LTC for my purchases for months and haven't looked back. If you haven't switched yet, grab a test transaction first to see how smooth it is.
