Bitcoin payment - how long until confirmation?

posted by GusBus 10 months ago 655 views 5 comments
Just placed my first order with a vendor from the verified vendor list and paid with Bitcoin like everyone recommended. The transaction shows on the blockchain but the vendor site still says "pending payment". It's been about 2 hours now. How long does it usually take for Bitcoin payments to confirm? I used a normal transaction fee, not the lowest option. The vendor's FAQ says it can take up to 6 hours but I wanted to check if that's normal or if I should be concerned. I triple-checked the wallet address before sending so I know I sent it to the right place. Anyone have experience with crypto payments? Is 2 hours normal waiting time?

Update: Just got the confirmation email! Took about 4 hours total. Order status changed to "payment confirmed" and now it says "processing". Thanks for the reassurance everyone. Was getting a bit nervous there lol. First time using crypto for anything.

2 hours is totally normal, especially if the Bitcoin network is busy. I've had payments take anywhere from 30 minutes to 6 hours to confirm. The vendor usually waits for at least 1-3 confirmations on the blockchain before marking your order as paid. This is standard security practice to prevent double-spending. As long as you can see the transaction on a blockchain explorer and it has the correct amount going to the correct address, you're fine. Just be patient!

Ah, don't worry. I mean, I've waited like 8 hours before, tbh. Network was just congested and I used a low fee. Honestly, as long as it's on the blockchain, it'll eventually confirm. I know it's nerve-wracking, but it'll go through.

Honestly, most trusted vendors are pretty solid about this – they totally get that crypto can take time, you know? If it's been, like, over 24 hours with no confirmations, you might wanna reach out to support. They've seen it all before, trust me.

You can check the transaction status on blockchain.com or blockchair.com – just look at how many confirmations it's got. Honestly, that's pretty much the easiest way to know.

Glad it worked out! Pro tip for next time though — honestly, you can usually just pay a bit more in fees to get confirmed faster. Most wallets'll let you pick between "slow", "normal", and "fast".

I pretty much always just go with "fast". It's, like, maybe $0.50–$1 more, but it'll usually confirm within an hour. Totally worth it for peace of mind, tbh.

Also, honestly, you might wanna check if the vendor accepts other coins like Litecoin or Ethereum. Sometimes those confirm way faster than Bitcoin, you know? Our help center's got guides on crypto payments, tbh.

Another tip: NEVER use the "replace-by-fee" option if your wallet has it while the transaction is pending for vendor payments. Some vendors might see that as suspicious. Just set an appropriate fee from the start and wait it out. Vendors understand crypto takes time.
