Bitcoin refund scam - new variant to watch for

posted by UnleadedID 5 months ago 620 views 3 comments

New scam variant: someone contacts buyers who were already scammed, offering to help recover their funds for a fee. This is a second-stage scam targeting people who are already victims. Crypto payments are not recoverable through third parties. Do not fall for this twice.

Sorry to anyone who experienced the first scam. Please do not let the second one catch you too.

Yeah, I've been seeing this one pop up more and more lately. Honestly, these recovery scammers are absolute bottom-feeders. They scrape forums, public complaint boards, or even get leaked customer lists from busted vendors, then reach out pretending to be a "refund agent" or "chargeback specialist." The pitch is always the same: "Pay us a small fee (usually in BTC) and we'll recover your money from that vendor who ripped you off." And guess what? They take your fee and ghost you.

So here's the pattern to watch for. First off, the contact is always unsolicited — a DM on Reddit, Telegram, or even email. They'll claim to have inside access or some legal channel that can force a refund. But real refund processes don't work through random DMs. Then they demand payment before any service is rendered, usually with a time pressure like "limited windows" or "we need to act before the wallet is drained." And any proof they show? Screenshots that look obviously edited or lifted from other conversations. If they mention "smart contract recovery" or "blockchain tracing" as a paid service, run. Legitimate tracing is usually free or part of a larger investigation, not a private fee-for-refund gig.

How do you protect yourself? Pretty simple: assume any inbound message about recovering lost funds is a scam until proven otherwise. Never pay an upfront fee — recovery scammers almost never deliver. If you've been burned before, treat that loss as a lesson and move on. The community here is good about calling out new scam tactics, so post screenshots (with personal info redacted) so others can spot the red flags. Also, enable 2FA on your forum accounts and use a unique password — these scammers often compromise old accounts to make their DMs look more legit.

Bottom line: if someone reaches out promising to get your Bitcoin back for a fee, they're lying. There's no magic refund button on the blockchain. Stay sharp and keep sharing these warnings.

Crypto is not recoverable. Anyone claiming they can recover it is running a scam.
