China Post EMS — is the price worth it?

Paid for EMS on two orders last year after getting tired of long standard shipping waits. Here is what I found about whether the premium is actually justified.

EMS from China (China Post Express Mail Service) sits between standard ePacket and private courier in both price and speed. For a small ID-sized package, EMS typically costs $15 to $25 more than standard shipping depending on the vendor. The stated delivery window to the US is 7 to 12 business days versus 15 to 25 days for standard.

What actually happened

My first EMS order took 11 business days from dispatch to delivery — right in the middle of the stated range. Tracking was more detailed than standard: I saw individual facility scans at the China Post hub, a US Customs entry scan, and then USPS handoff. The package moved through customs in two days, which is faster than my standard-shipping average of four days.

The second EMS order took 9 business days. Same quality of tracking. No customs hold.

The customs consideration

EMS packages go through the same US customs process as standard mail but are typically processed through different examination facilities. Anecdotally, some people report higher scrutiny on express shipments because customs allocates more manual inspection resources to smaller, faster moving streams. My two EMS orders cleared without issue but my sample size is small.

When EMS makes sense

If you need a card within two weeks and standard shipping might miss that window, EMS is the right tool. The speed is real and the tracking is genuinely better than standard. If you are ordering well ahead of when you need the card, the price premium buys little. Standard shipping at 15 to 25 days with good packaging is fine for non-urgent orders.

One note: not all vendors offer EMS as an option. Some use DHL or FedEx Express for their premium tier instead. Ask specifically which carrier and service class the premium option uses before paying extra — "express shipping" is not a standardized term and the actual service varies significantly by vendor.
