The seed phrase (recovery phrase) for a crypto wallet is the single point of failure for your funds. Anyone with your seed phrase can restore your wallet and take everything in it, from any device, anywhere in the world. Here is how to protect it effectively.
What a seed phrase is
A BIP39 seed phrase is typically 12 or 24 words in a specific order from a standardized wordlist. This sequence of words encodes your wallet's master private key. It is generated when you set up the wallet and never changes. If you lose your phone and your computer but have your seed phrase, you can restore your full wallet on any compatible device. If someone finds your seed phrase, they immediately have full access to all funds in the wallet.
How not to store it
Do not save it in a password manager, note-taking app, cloud storage, email, or any digital system that is connected to the internet. Cloud accounts are compromised regularly. A seed phrase in Google Drive or Apple Notes is protected only by your account password and two-factor authentication — both of which can be compromised. Do not take a screenshot of it. Smartphone photos sync to cloud services automatically in most configurations.
How to store it
Write it on paper with a permanent marker. Keep the paper in a location that is physically secure — a locked drawer, a safe, somewhere only you access. Do not keep it in your wallet with the cards it funds. For larger amounts, two or more copies in different physical locations protects against fire or loss of a single copy. Metal seed phrase backup plates (available for under $30 at hardware stores or crypto suppliers) survive fire and water better than paper.
The correct model is: this is the same level of protection you would give physical cash in the same amount. Match your storage solution to the value stored.
