Customs hold - what to expect and how long

posted by haylee 4 months ago 594 views 5 comments

Package sat in customs for 9 days. Got nerve-wracking toward the end. Then it cleared and moved to delivery in 2 days. Customs holds of 5-10 days are normal. Do not reach out to the vendor until you hit 2 weeks with no movement.

Yeah, you're spot on. It really is a coin flip. I've had stuff stuck in ISC for nearly three weeks before it finally moved, then other packs clear in a day. Best bet is just to chill out and not obsess over the tracking number update every hour. Usually the first scan out of the transit hub is the big relief. If it's been over two weeks, then yeah, maybe reach out.

Yeah, totally agree. The whole process is unpredictable. I've had stuff clear in two hours and other stuff sit for two weeks. Best thing you can do is just keep an eye on your tracking number update, but don't stress until like the 14-day mark. Honestly, if your stealth was on point from the start, there's usually nothing to worry about. Just part of the game. Hope it pops through for you soon.

Customs processing varies a lot by time of year and entry point. Some ports are slower.

Good rule of thumb on the 2 week contact threshold. No point in messaging before that.

Yeah, just wanted to chime in and second what’s been said – nine days in customs? That's honestly nothing out of the ordinary. I've been through this rodeo a bunch of times, and it pretty much seems like a total coin flip how long they hold onto something. Every courier has their own quirks too. If it’s coming via EMS, you'll usually see it sit at the ISC for a few days before it clears – sometimes longer if it hits a major hub like New York or LA. DHL tends to move things faster, but they're also more likely to do a hands-on inspection, in my experience, and that can add a couple extra days if it gets flagged for a closer look.

Honestly, packaging plays a huge role in how smoothly this goes. If the vendor put it in a Mylar bag or some kind of opaque wrap, that usually passes initial x-ray without raising any red flags. I've had orders come in a simple bubble mailer – those tend to be fine too, since they're so common. But if the package feels bulky or has weird folds, they're way more likely to open it, and that's when the real delays start. Even then, most times it's just a quick peek and then they seal it back up.

Customs are still a mystery to me – like, why some items zip through in 24 hours while others sit for half a month. Nine days? I'd consider that pretty standard for a non-peak season. Around the holidays or after some random CBP announcement, those numbers easily jump to two weeks or more. The anxiety is real – I still refresh the tracking like a dozen times a day – but I've learned to set my baseline expectation at about 7–10 days for ISC processing. Anything under that is a win. So yeah, tbh, hold tight, it'll move. Just give it a few more days before you start stressing.
