DHL Express for ID orders — what actually happened

Used DHL Express on three separate orders over the past year after getting tired of three-week waits on standard shipping. Here is exactly what the experience was like, good and bad.

The first DHL order came from a vendor in Hong Kong. Dispatch to delivery took eight days. Tracking was excellent — updates every few hours as the package moved through each facility. The package went Hong Kong → Frankfurt → Cincinnati → my local facility → delivered. Each hop was within a day, which is what you pay for with express.

The customs experience

The second DHL order got held at US Customs for two additional days beyond the standard express timeline. DHL's tracking showed "Customs clearance processing" for 48 hours before releasing. This is actually common with express freight — DHL moves packages faster through transit but US Customs processes them on their own schedule. The total time was still 10 days end-to-end, which beat any standard shipping option.

The third order was the smoothest: seven days flat, no customs hold. Same origin vendor, roughly similar timeline, no explanation for the difference. Customs holds appear random to me at this point.

What DHL does differently from USPS

DHL delivers to your door as a commercial carrier with a real tracking chain. If you are not home, they leave a door tag and attempt redelivery. You can also redirect to a DHL ServicePoint location for pickup. This is more flexible than USPS in-person pickup, which requires going to your specific local office.

The downside is visibility. A DHL package looks like a DHL package — the carrier identity is obvious from the tracking updates and the label on the box. USPS standard mail blends into the general mail stream more anonymously.

For time-sensitive orders where you need the card within two weeks, DHL is reliable. For orders where the lower profile of postal mail matters more than speed, USPS standard still makes more sense.
