Exchange withdrawal fees — a practical comparison

posted by voltron 3 weeks ago 204 views 0 comments

Withdrawal fees from exchanges can meaningfully affect the total cost of paying vendors in crypto, particularly on smaller orders. Here is what I found comparing fees across four commonly used exchanges.

Bitcoin withdrawal fees

Coinbase charges a variable fee based on current network conditions, typically $0.75 to $3 for standard Bitcoin withdrawals. Binance charges a fixed 0.0005 BTC (approximately $25 to $35 depending on price). Kraken charges 0.00025 BTC (roughly $12 to $17). Gemini charges a variable network fee plus a small base fee.

For a $100 order, a $25 withdrawal fee on Binance represents a 25 percent added cost. Kraken's lower fixed fee is more favorable for small withdrawals. Coinbase's variable fee is lowest when Bitcoin network fees are low but can spike during congestion.

Monero withdrawal fees

Exchanges that list Monero charge lower absolute withdrawal fees than Bitcoin because Monero network fees are minimal. Kraken charges approximately 0.0001 XMR (under $0.02 at current prices). Binance charges 0.0001 XMR similarly. Withdrawal fees for Monero are essentially negligible regardless of which exchange you use.

Timing withdrawals

For Bitcoin, timing your withdrawal during low-fee periods (Sunday is historically cheaper than weekday afternoons) reduces the variable component of Coinbase's fee. The savings are small but compound across multiple orders over time.

The non-custodial alternative

If you buy BTC via a non-custodial swap service and send directly to your wallet, there is no withdrawal fee — only the network transaction fee at time of sending, which you control. This is the most fee-efficient approach but requires more setup than a standard exchange account.

The most fee-efficient setup — buying crypto through a non-KYC method and sending from a self-custody wallet — requires an upfront time investment to configure but reduces per-transaction friction significantly once established. Wallet software like Cake Wallet handles Monero and other cryptocurrencies natively and provides a clean interface for checking transaction status without requiring a separate exchange account. Once configured, the entire payment workflow runs through tools you control.
