Most ID orders arrive in small envelopes that fit in a mailbox without any interaction. But if you're getting a large group order or something came packaged differently than expected, understanding how FedEx handles larger deliveries matters.
How FedEx delivery works for residential
FedEx residential delivery defaults to leaving packages at the door for most package sizes, unless the shipper has requested signature confirmation. For international packages, FedEx sometimes requires an in-person signature at the first delivery attempt — this depends on the declared value and the origin country's export requirements rather than the recipient's preference.
If you're not home for a FedEx delivery that requires a signature, the driver leaves a door tag and FedEx will attempt delivery two more times on subsequent business days. After three failed attempts, the package goes to a FedEx facility for pickup, where it holds for 5 business days before being returned to sender.
FedEx Hold at Location
FedEx allows recipients to redirect an in-transit package to a FedEx facility or authorized retailer for pickup rather than home delivery. You can do this through the FedEx Delivery Manager service using the tracking number. This is useful if you want to receive the package somewhere other than your home address after it's already shipped — more flexibility than USPS options.
For typical ID orders
Standard novelty ID orders are small enough that FedEx treats them as standard residential parcels — no signature required unless the shipper added it. The main practical difference from USPS is that FedEx won't deliver to a PO box, so if your delivery address is a PO box you'll need to use USPS or a FedEx facility address. FedEx Office locations accept packages for customer pickup, and these provide a legitimate physical address for delivery purposes without being a PO box.
If a FedEx package shows as delivered but isn't there, FedEx's GPS delivery confirmation system means they can show the delivery coordinates. Contact them within 24 hours with your tracking number.
