Got a FedEx delivery exception on an order last month — the tracking showed "Delivery exception: unable to deliver" with no further detail. Documented what the process looks like for resolving it.
What delivery exceptions are
A delivery exception means something prevented the package from being delivered on the scheduled day. The reasons range from the address being temporarily inaccessible, the recipient not being present for a signature-required package, weather delays, or a damaged package that was pulled from the delivery stream for inspection.
FedEx shows the exception in tracking but does not always explain the specific reason in the public tracking view. The detailed reason is available to the account holder (the shipper) or to a recipient who calls FedEx directly with the tracking number.
Steps I took
Called FedEx customer service with the tracking number. The agent could see that the exception was a failed delivery attempt due to an incorrect address unit number — the driver had the right street address but the apartment number on the label was for a unit that no longer existed at that building. FedEx offered three options: redeliver to the corrected address, hold at a FedEx facility for pickup, or return to sender.
I chose the FedEx facility pickup option. The package was held for five business days, which was sufficient time for me to collect it. Pickup requires a photo ID matching the name on the package label — something to factor in depending on what name you used for the shipping label.
Prevention
Address accuracy on the shipping label is more critical with FedEx than with USPS. FedEx drivers are less likely to use local knowledge to correct minor address errors. Double-check unit numbers, apartment numbers, and building designations before submitting an order.
The FedEx delivery exception handling process is faster when the address correction is minor and can be resolved through their automated address correction tool. Major address issues — wrong city, wrong zip code, unit number missing — require a customer service call and sometimes a formal address correction request that adds one to two business days. Entering the delivery address with full precision when placing the original order eliminates the majority of exception scenarios before they occur.
