Some reshipping and mail forwarding services use FedEx SmartPost (now called FedEx Ground Economy) for domestic forwarding legs. Here is what the service is and what to expect from it.
What SmartPost/Ground Economy is
FedEx Ground Economy uses FedEx's ground network for most of the transit and then hands off to USPS for final delivery. The hybrid model is cheaper than full FedEx delivery but slower and with different tracking characteristics. The handoff to USPS creates a tracking gap — the package disappears from FedEx tracking and reappears in USPS tracking with a new tracking number after the handoff.
Transit times
FedEx Ground Economy typically delivers in 3 to 8 business days from the origin facility, slower than Priority Mail and similar in range to First Class. The variance is higher than Priority because of the dual-carrier routing. Packages can be delayed at the FedEx-to-USPS handoff point, which is the most common source of unexpected delays.
When it is offered vs when to prefer alternatives
If a reshipping service offers Ground Economy at a notably lower cost than Priority Mail, the price difference is worth evaluating against the variance risk. For a time-sensitive order, Priority Mail is the more reliable option. For an order where you have no deadline, the cost savings from Ground Economy may be worth the slower and less predictable transit.
One practical note: FedEx Ground Economy does not deliver to PO boxes. If your final delivery address is a PO box, request Priority Mail or standard USPS delivery from your reshipping service.
FedEx SmartPost (now FedEx Ground Economy) hands off to USPS for final delivery, which means delivery timing and USPS carrier availability at the destination address affect your actual receipt date. If your address has known USPS delivery issues or if you want to guarantee FedEx-to-door delivery without a postal handoff, requesting a FedEx Express or FedEx Ground service from your reshipping provider is worth the additional cost for time-sensitive packages.
