Used both carriers for orders from international vendors over the past year. The comparison is more nuanced than speed alone, and there are practical differences worth knowing before you choose at checkout.
Speed comparison
FedEx International Priority and DHL Express are both nominally 2 to 5 business day services. In practice, DHL has been consistently faster in my experience — typically arriving one to two days earlier than FedEx for similar origin and destination combinations. FedEx was quoted at 3 to 5 days on three orders and delivered at day 5, 4, and 6. DHL was quoted at 2 to 4 days and delivered at day 3, 3, and 4.
Customs handling
Both carriers use broker-assisted customs clearance, which is generally faster than postal customs channels. DHL's clearance process was notably smoother on my orders — no delays beyond the initial customs scan. One of my three FedEx orders was held for additional information that required a broker call, adding about 48 hours. The other two cleared without issue. Small sample size, but DHL's customs track record for me is cleaner.
Delivery signature requirements
DHL more consistently requires a signature at delivery for international express packages, which means you need to be home or redirect to a pickup point. FedEx has more flexible delivery options including leaving packages without a signature in many residential situations. If daytime delivery without being home is important, FedEx is more flexible on this.
Pricing
DHL typically costs $5 to $15 more than FedEx for equivalent service levels from most vendors who offer both. Whether the speed advantage justifies the premium depends on how time-sensitive your order is.
My preference is DHL when it is offered and timing matters. FedEx when DHL is not available or when the delivery flexibility of no-signature-required is more important than raw speed.
