Group order discount worth it? - advice needed
Yeah, I've done a few group orders now and the savings are real if you put in the effort. With 6 people we landed around 40% off too, which honestly is about the sweet spot for mid-sized groups. Smaller groups of 3-4 might only get 20-25% off, and once you go above 8-10 people the logistics get way messier for diminishing returns. So your experience tracks.
One thing I wish someone told me before my first group order: watch the crypto fees closely. Sending BTC to the vendor often means you're all pooling funds into one wallet first, then the organizer sends the bulk payment. If the network is congested, that single transaction fee can eat into your supposed discount. I've started using LTC or XMR for group orders — much lower tx fees and faster confirmations. Just make sure everyone in the group is comfortable with whatever coin you settle on.
Escrow is another big one. In a group buy, the organizer typically handles the whole payment and shipping. That puts a ton of trust in one person. If they're not using escrow on their end with the vendor, you have zero protection if something goes wrong — vendor exit scams, packs not landing, etc. I only join groups where the organizer is willing to use a reliable escrow service for the main payment. Yeah, it costs a small percentage, but it's a lot better than losing the whole pot. Some groups skip it to save a few bucks and then regret it.
Hidden fees can also chip away at that 40% savings. The vendor might offer free shipping for orders above a certain amount, but once you split the pack into individual shipments, each reship costs something. Packaging materials, tracking fees, and the organizer's time — it all adds up. I've seen groups where the final per-person cost was only 25-30% under retail after all that. Also, if the pack gets seized, do you have a re-ship policy? Groups can get complicated with who takes the loss. Communication is everything.
Bottom line: the discount is real and worth the coordination, but go in with eyes open on the crypto fees, have an escrow plan, and account for every hidden cost before you commit. With a solid group and a clear split sheet, you'll come out ahead.
Just make sure everyone pays you first lol
