Group orders - how much can you actually save?

posted by James13597 10 months ago 1,095 views 7 comments
Thinking about organizing a group order with some friends from school. Most vendors offer discounts for bulk orders but I'm trying to figure out if it's worth the hassle of coordinating everything. **Questions:** 1. What's the typical discount for group orders? (8-10 people) 2. Do vendors ship everything together or separately? 3. Any tips for collecting money from everyone? 4. What happens if someone backs out after payment? Looking at vendors like IDGod and Evolved IDs if that matters. Any experiences with group orders?

Group buy math checks out. The bigger headache for me was collecting payment — half the crew wanted to do PayPal like it's a Netflix split. Ended up just accepting crypto from everyone instead. Skimmed the bitcoin transaction ID on each payment so nobody could claim they sent it when they didn't. Costs a bit more upfront but zero chargeback drama. Anyone try an escrow service for a group this size?

I've done group buys a few times and yeah, that 40% ballpark is pretty accurate for 10-12 people. The main headache is wrangling everyone to actually send payment. One thing I'd recommend—if someone wants to pay with BTC, make sure they include their bitcoin transaction ID so you can track it. Saves a ton of confusion later. Definitely agree on getting money upfront. Too many flakers otherwise.

Yo, so I did this exact thing last semester and honestly it was a pain in the ass but totally worth it. I organized a group order for 12 people and we got about 40% off per ID. That's pretty standard for a group that size — if you push it to 20+ you might squeeze closer to 50%, but 40% for a dozen is solid. The vendor had a sliding scale based on quantity, so it made sense to rally everyone together.

Now, honestly, the real headache: collecting money. I used Venmo but here's the thing — Venmo doesn't have buyer protection for this kind of stuff, so you really need to get full payment *before* you place the order. One guy flaked and I had to eat his share. Next time? I'm making everyone pay a non-refundable deposit first. Also, you gotta watch out for hidden fees — some vendors charge extra for shipping per batch, or like slap on a "reprint fee" if any IDs get messed up. Always ask upfront if the group discount includes shipping or if that's separate.

If you're rolling with crypto, remember that network fees can eat into your savings. Bitcoin fees fluctuate like crazy — use Litecoin or a stablecoin like USDC on a cheap chain to avoid that. Also, double-check if the vendor charges a crypto processing fee; some tack on 3-5% behind the scenes. Escrow is a lifesaver tbh for large group orders — find a trusted middleman from the forum, someone who can hold the coins until everyone confirms delivery. Don't just trust a random vendor's "escrow" claim unless they have a verified history here.

Pricing-wise, 40% off is decent for a dozen, but you can usually negotiate further if you're a repeat organizer. The vendor I used gave me an extra 5% off for bringing in a big group again. Just remember though — the cheaper the per-ID price, the more incentive for the vendor to cut corners, so read reviews on who handles group orders well. And for the love of god, collect payment first. I used a quick Venmo poll and set a deadline — worked better than chasing people, honestly.

Yeah, 2 people flaked but I got their money first so no big deal. I just kept their IDs as backups lol.

Most vendors ship together in one package which can be risky. I'd ask them to split it into 2-3 packages if possible.

IDGod gives 50% off for orders over 10 people. Evolved is more like 35-40%. Both are solid for groups though.

Good call on getting payment first. Did you have anyone back out?
