LocalMonero (now merged into AgoraDesk) is a peer-to-peer exchange where individuals buy and sell Monero directly with each other. It's one of the best options for acquiring Monero without KYC verification. Here's how it works in practice.

How the platform works

Sellers post offers listing the amount of XMR they'll sell, the payment method they accept (cash, gift cards, bank transfer, etc.), and the exchange rate they want. Buyers browse offers and initiate a trade. The seller's Monero is held in escrow by the platform during the trade. Once the buyer confirms payment, the Monero is released. If there's a dispute, the platform mediates.

Payment methods that don't require identity

Cash in mail, cash in person, and gift cards are the most private payment methods available on the platform. Cash-in-mail trades work by physically mailing banknotes to the seller's address, who then releases the Monero after receiving payment. This sounds old-fashioned but works reliably for small amounts under $200.

Gift card trades are faster — you purchase a gift card from a retailer (Amazon, Google Play, etc.) and provide the card code to the seller. Most sellers accept specific gift card types and the exchange rate reflects the gift card liquidity premium, typically 5-15% below spot.

Safety on the platform

Only trade with sellers who have completed many trades and have positive feedback. New sellers with no history carry higher risk. Keep trade amounts modest until you've confirmed a seller is reliable. The escrow system protects you from receiving nothing after payment, but it doesn't protect against sellers who provide invalid gift card codes and then dispute.
