Mailbox vs front door delivery preference

For those wondering: mailbox delivery is generally preferable. No interaction required, sits safely until you retrieve it, and looks like ordinary mail. Door delivery is also fine but mailbox is the cleaner option for this kind of package.

Mailbox all day, no question. I've had way too many close calls with front door drops—neighbors walking by, packages sitting out for hours while I'm stuck at work. With the mailbox, it's just… gone. Slipped in, zero interaction, no timing pressure. Totally discreet. Once it's in there, I can grab it whenever I get home without anyone knowing what's inside.

Courier choice honestly makes a big difference. USPS is the obvious go-to for mailbox delivery since they have the key access. UPS and FedEx usually default to front door unless the vendor uses something like UPS SurePost or FedEx SmartPost—those hand off to USPS for the final mile. Those hybrid options are a total lifesaver—they route through local hubs and then get sorted into a carrier's route for mailbox drop. Transit hubs like the big regional centers—Memphis, Louisville, or your local USPS distribution facilities—can add a day or two, but honestly, it's worth it for the peace of mind.

Packaging durability is another thing you gotta think about. Mailboxes have size limits—like 6x6x18 or so—so the vendor's gotta use envelopes or small boxes. I've had a few bubble mailers get squeezed in too tight and end up a little crushed, but nothing inside ever got damaged. The key is that the package has to be robust enough to survive sorting machines and mailbox bending. Some vendors use those thin cardboard mailers that work fine, but I wouldn't risk anything that could break under pressure.

As for customs, mailbox delivery can be a pain if there's a signature requirement. Most international shipments with tracking will flag an "item delivered" scan when it hits the mailbox, so you don't get that whole "left on porch" anxiety. But if it requires a signature, you're stuck with front door or a pickup notice. I've personally never had issues with customs delays specifically because of the mailbox preference—just the usual hold times at international hubs before it gets handed off to the local carrier.

Overall shipping speed with mailbox delivery is usually about the same as regular first-class or Priority Mail. The hybrid courier routes might add a day compared to a direct UPS ground drop, but it's a small price for the discretion. No ringing doorbells, no awkward neighbor chats, no rushing home to beat the weather. Mailbox all the way.

PO box is even better if you have one. Ultimate in discreet receipt.

Door delivery is fine too honestly. They just leave it. No different from any other package.
