One of my orders from last spring was held at US Customs for inspection. It was eventually released and delivered, but the process took two weeks longer than normal and produced a lot of anxiety in the meantime. Here is what actually happened.
The first sign
The tracking showed "Inbound Into Customs" on a Monday and then went silent. After five days with no further update, I had a pretty clear indication that the package was being held for inspection rather than just processing through the normal customs queue. The normal customs clearance step takes one to two days at most.
What I did
Nothing, for the first week. Contacting customs about a package you did not ship and have no documentation for is not useful and potentially counterproductive. I let the process run.
After 10 days with no movement, I notified the vendor that the package appeared to be held at customs and asked about their reshipping policy in case it was seized. The vendor confirmed they would reship if the package showed no movement within 30 days of the last tracking event.
How it resolved
On day 14 of the hold, tracking updated to "Released from Customs" followed immediately by "Departed US Facility." The package delivered four days later. No explanation is given for why a package was held or why it was released. Customs operates on criteria that are not publicly disclosed, and packages are sometimes held and released without any action on the recipient's part.
What I learned
The most important thing is patience. Packages held at customs for 10 to 20 days are not necessarily seized — they are often just inspected and released. Reshipping before that window is closed wastes the vendor's resources and potentially draws more attention. The 30-day threshold most vendors use for reship is grounded in practical experience with how long customs holds typically last.
