Non-custodial exchange for anonymous crypto

Switched to non-custodial exchanges for all my crypto purchases about a year ago. The difference in privacy is significant and the trade-off in convenience is smaller than I expected.

Custodial vs non-custodial

A custodial exchange (Coinbase, Binance, Kraken) holds your funds for you. To use one, you complete KYC verification — government ID, selfie, address verification. Every trade you make and every withdrawal you send is permanently recorded in their systems. If someone subpoenas that data, there is a complete history of your crypto activity tied to your real identity.

A non-custodial exchange does not hold your funds at any point. You connect your own wallet, execute a swap, and the exchanged coins go directly to your wallet. There is no account, no KYC, and no transaction history stored by the exchange on your behalf.

Non-custodial options that work

FixedFloat and SideShift are the most commonly recommended for swapping Bitcoin to Monero. They require no registration — you specify an input amount, provide a Monero destination address, and they give you a Bitcoin deposit address. You send BTC, they send XMR to your wallet within 10 to 30 minutes. Rates include a small fee (around 0.5 to 1 percent) that is visible before you commit.

Bisq is a fully decentralized peer-to-peer exchange that requires more setup but eliminates even the minimal operator visibility that FixedFloat has. Best for larger amounts where operational security is important.

The privacy reality

A non-custodial swap does not erase the on-chain history of the coins you send in. If you send BTC from a Coinbase wallet to FixedFloat, that BTC still has a Coinbase origin on the blockchain. The swap converts it to Monero, and from that point forward the trail ends. For most people ordering novelty IDs, the combination of non-custodial swap plus Monero is sufficient for practical purposes.
