The standard crypto buying flow — sign up for an exchange, verify identity, buy, withdraw — creates a permanent KYC record linking you to your crypto holdings. For buyers who want to avoid that record, peer-to-peer exchanges are the practical alternative. Here is how they work.
What P2P exchanges do differently
P2P platforms connect individual buyers and sellers directly. You browse seller listings, find one that accepts your preferred payment method (cash, bank transfer, gift cards), and trade with them directly. The platform facilitates the escrow — the seller's crypto is held by the platform until you confirm payment, then released. No ID verification is required on most P2P platforms for small trades under $1,000.
Which platforms to use
LocalMonero is the most relevant option for buying Monero directly — it is P2P and specifically focused on XMR. For Bitcoin, Bisq is a decentralized P2P exchange that requires no account at all — you install the software and trade directly. Bisq is more technical but has zero data retention. HodlHodl is another option for Bitcoin P2P without full KYC.
The tradeoff: prices on P2P platforms are typically 2 to 8% above market rate. Sellers build in a premium for the privacy they provide. For small purchases this is a few dollars. For larger purchases the premium is more significant.
Cash trades
The most private option on most P2P platforms is cash by mail or cash in person. Cash by mail trades involve mailing physical currency to the seller, who releases the crypto once received. This adds several days to the process and requires trusting the escrow system, but leaves no banking trail whatsoever. In-person cash trades are faster but require meeting a stranger, which carries its own considerations.
For most buyers, LocalMonero with a cash payment method hits the right balance of privacy, simplicity, and acceptable premium. The setup time for a first trade is about 30 minutes and the process becomes familiar quickly.
