Had an order held at US Customs for 18 days last fall. I tracked every event and talked to people who had similar experiences to understand the process. Here is what a customs hold actually looks like from the outside.
Day-by-day tracking
Day 1: "Arrived at US Customs." Day 2-3: No update. Day 4: Still "In Customs." This is the normal first few days — customs processes thousands of packages and most clear within three to five business days.
Day 8: Still no update. This is where I started considering that it might be a hold rather than just normal processing time. The average customs clearance time is one to three days. Eight days was three standard deviations from normal in my experience.
Day 18: "Released from Customs — Departed US Facility." Then it delivered three days later.
What the hold was
No official explanation is ever provided for customs holds or releases. Based on the contents and timing, I believe it was a random physical inspection that got queued behind other packages. This is common — customs inspects a percentage of international mail physically, and the selection is partly random and partly based on pattern matching by automated systems.
What I did during the hold
Nothing proactive. I notified the vendor at day 10 that the package appeared held. They confirmed their reshipping policy kicked in at 30 days of no delivery event. I waited.
What I learned
Patience is the correct posture for a customs hold of under 20 days. Packages held this way are most often released and delivered without any additional action or consequence. The anxiety during the hold is real but not proportional to the likely outcome. Most held packages deliver eventually; seized packages are a much smaller subset of held packages than anxiety makes them feel.
