Three times I have seen tracking show my package at a local USPS facility for days without it being delivered. Each time resolved differently. Here is what I learned about this specific situation.
Why packages sit at local facilities
Several things can cause a package to sit at a local post office or USPS distribution center without moving to delivery. The most common is insufficient capacity on the delivery vehicle — if your carrier's route is full, packages get held for the next available delivery slot. This typically resolves within one to two business days.
A second cause is a delivery address issue — apartment number missing, gate code required, or an address the carrier cannot find. Carriers will attempt delivery and leave a notice, but if no notice was left and the package is not delivered, this is worth checking.
Third: the package may require a signature or ID check and the carrier prefers to attempt delivery when someone is home. Tracking sometimes does not specify this requirement in advance.
What I did each time
First time: called the local post office and gave them my tracking number. They confirmed it was on a vehicle for delivery that day. Arrived that afternoon.
Second time: same call, but the clerk could not locate the package in their system. Filed an online missing mail search and the package arrived two days later without any explanation.
Third time: the package showed "Available for Pickup" — I had missed a delivery notice. Picked it up at the window with a valid ID, no questions asked about contents.
When to escalate
If a package shows "At Local Post Office" for more than four business days with no delivery or pickup notice, contact the vendor. This is longer than any operational delay should reasonably take. At seven days, the reship clause in most vendor policies starts to become relevant. Keep the tracking number and screenshot the status for your records before contacting anyone.
