Started using USDT for vendor payments about six months ago after Bitcoin fees spiked during a period of market congestion. The experience has been mostly positive with one important caveat I will explain.
What stablecoins offer
USDT (Tether) and USDC (Circle) are dollar-pegged stablecoins — each token is designed to maintain a 1:1 value with the US dollar. This eliminates the price volatility risk of paying in Bitcoin or Monero. When a vendor quotes $120, you send 120 USDT and there is no ambiguity about whether the amount is correct due to exchange rate movement between quoting and sending.
Transaction fees on USDT are low when sent over the Tron network (TRC-20 standard) — typically under $1. The Ethereum network (ERC-20) is more expensive, sometimes $5 to $20 in gas fees. Make sure you are using the same network the vendor specifies, or the payment will arrive on the wrong chain and require manual recovery.
The privacy caveat
USDT transactions are transparent on whichever blockchain they use. Tether also has the technical ability to freeze USDT holdings under certain circumstances and has done so at the request of law enforcement. USDC has similar controls. Neither stablecoin provides meaningful privacy. If privacy is a concern, Monero remains the better choice. Stablecoins are a convenience trade-off, not a privacy tool.
Getting USDT
Available on most major exchanges — Coinbase, Binance, Kraken all list it. Purchase process is identical to buying any other cryptocurrency. Withdraw to your own wallet before paying; do not send directly from an exchange.
For TRC-20 USDT specifically, you need a wallet that supports the Tron network. Trust Wallet handles this cleanly. The TronLink extension wallet works for desktop. Confirm network compatibility with the vendor's payment address before sending — sending TRC-20 USDT to an ERC-20 address sends funds to a different chain entirely and recovery requires the recipient to claim them manually.
Overall: stablecoins are the most friction-free payment method for dollar-denominated purchases once you have the wallet setup right. The trade-off is zero privacy. Know which priority matters more for your situation before choosing.
