If buying Bitcoin or Monero through a KYC exchange feels like too much of a paper trail, peer-to-peer exchanges are the main alternative. Here is how they work and what to watch out for.
What P2P exchanges are
P2P exchanges connect buyers and sellers directly, without the exchange acting as a custodian. You browse listings from sellers, agree on a price and payment method, and the exchange holds the crypto in escrow while you pay the seller directly. Once the seller confirms payment, the escrow releases the crypto to your wallet.
The key advantage is that many P2P sellers accept payment methods that do not require your identity — cash in person, gift cards, or bank transfers using only an alias. This breaks the link between your real identity and the crypto purchase that a KYC exchange creates.
The main platforms
LocalMonero is the primary P2P platform for Monero specifically. Listings vary by region, and some sellers accept cash by mail. Fees are low and the escrow system is straightforward.
Bisq is a decentralized exchange that requires no registration whatsoever. It runs as a local desktop application with no central server. The tradeoff is complexity — setup takes longer, liquidity is lower for some pairs, and the user interface is less polished than centralized alternatives.
HodlHodl operates for Bitcoin and does not hold KYC information. It uses multisig escrow rather than a custodial model.
What to watch for
P2P sellers charge a premium over the spot rate, usually 2 to 7 percent depending on payment method. Cash and gift card trades carry higher premiums because the seller takes on more risk. This premium is the cost of privacy.
New buyer accounts have limited trust. Sellers with high reputation scores will sometimes decline trades from accounts with no history. Starting with small amounts to build a transaction history before larger purchases is the practical approach.
Scams exist on P2P platforms. Only trade with sellers who have established reputation scores and multiple completed transactions. Never release escrow before confirming you have received the crypto in your own wallet.
