Price Ranges for Quality Novelty IDs?

posted by emailinquiry 9 months ago 874 views 7 comments

I'm seeing novelty IDs priced anywhere from $50 to $200+ and I'm confused about what's a fair price.

What I'm seeing:

  • Budget vendors: $50-80 per ID
  • Mid-range: $100-140 per ID
  • Premium: $150-200+ per ID

Is the price difference really worth it? Or are the expensive ones just overcharging?

I understand you get what you pay for, but I'm on a student budget. Will a $80 novelty ID from a trusted vendor work fine for basic use (liquor stores, casual bars)?

Or should I save up more for a premium one?

Yeah, that price range sounds about right. I grabbed a mid-tier one around $120 and it's held up solid for almost a year now—scans fine and the material is decent enough. One thing I'd add is that even if you're hyped to order ASAP, definitely look into alternatives to paying directly with a credit card or obvious methods. Paying with BTC through a proper wallet, not something like Coinbase, and maybe checking for an escrow service can save headaches. Just my two cents.

I started with a $75 one from IDGod (Ohio) and it worked fine for what I needed. Now I have a $150 one from Evolved (PA) and the difference is noticeable, but the cheap one still did its job.

What about states? Do certain states cost more because they're harder to make?

That's helpful to know. Maybe I'll start with a mid-range one and see how it goes. Thanks everyone!

Yes, definitely. Complex states like California, New York, and Pennsylvania cost more because they have intricate security features. Simpler states like Ohio or Mississippi are usually cheaper.

Smart plan. Check the vendor reviews and pick one with good feedback for your chosen state. That matters more than price sometimes.

Honestly, it depends what you need it for. For casual use at liquor stores and college bars, mid-range ($100–140) is pretty much the sweet spot. Budget ones can work but quality varies a lot — you get what you pay for, and I've seen budget IDs that scan fine but fall apart after a couple weeks in a wallet. But then again, going too high-end with those $200+ "premium" options is usually overkill if you're just grabbing some beers or hitting the club. There's definitely a sweet spot around that $100–140 range where the materials, printing, and scanning reliability all come together without completely wrecking your wallet.

One thing I'd say is be careful with payment. A lot of places take crypto, and if they do, make sure you account for network fees — especially with Bitcoin or Ethereum. You might think you're sending $120, but then the mining fee eats $10–20 more, or the conversion rate shifts between the time you send and when they confirm. Always send a little extra to cover that, or ask if they prefer a coin with lower fees like Litecoin or something similar. And for the love of god, avoid direct bank transfers or gift cards — those are red flags, tbh. Escrow's another big thing. If a vendor offers an escrow service through the forum or a third party, use it — it saves you from getting burned. But don't trust random "escrow" links thrown in DMs; scammers love to fake that. Stick to the escrow systems listed in trusted vendor reviews. And yeah, watch out for hidden fees: some vendors will quote you a price and then tack on "express shipping," "reprint insurance," or "priority handling" after you've paid. Always ask upfront what's included. A $130 quote can easily turn into $170 if you're not clear on shipping costs and any extras. Budget around $100–150 all-in for a decent quality casual-use ID, and you should be solid.
