USPS Priority Mail Express is the fastest domestic mail option and is sometimes used for the domestic leg of a two-step international shipping arrangement. Here is what to know if you are considering it.
What PME actually is
Priority Mail Express (PME) is USPS's overnight service, guaranteeing delivery by 10:30 AM or 3 PM the next day to most locations, or by 6 PM to some addresses. It includes $100 of insurance automatically and tracking to the delivery attempt level. It is available 365 days a year, including Sundays and holidays to some locations.
This is a domestic service. It is not a shipping option for international shipments from overseas vendors. The relevant use case is if you are using a reshipping service — the vendor ships internationally to the reshipping facility, and the facility uses PME to forward to you domestically for maximum speed.
Cost
PME costs $35 to $50 for standard packages depending on weight and zone. This is significantly more than Priority Mail (which is 2-3 days at $10-20) and much more than First Class. The overnight guarantee justifies the premium only if you have a genuine same-day or next-day need.
When it makes sense
If your package is at a reshipping facility and you need it in 24 hours rather than three days, PME gets you there. For most orders without a hard deadline, Priority Mail 2-3 day at half the price is the rational choice.
One practical note: PME to a PO Box is possible but the guaranteed delivery time extends to end-of-day rather than AM delivery. If using a PO Box, confirm the actual delivery window with your local post office before counting on morning delivery.
One detail worth confirming before using Priority Mail Express: the money-back guarantee for missed delivery windows applies to postage refunds, not to your actual order outcome. The guarantee has specific exclusions including weather events and circumstances outside USPS control. For time-sensitive orders, treating the express service as a higher-probability option rather than a guarantee is the appropriate mindset, with a contingency plan if the package does not arrive as expected.
