Shipping Times - USA Domestic vs International
Yeah, 3 weeks for international is honestly pretty solid in my experience. I've had packages land in as little as 10 days during slow seasons, but I've also seen them drag out past 5 weeks when the holiday rush hits. Courier choice makes a big difference here—if the sender uses a private carrier like DHL or FedEx for the last leg, you're looking at way fewer stopovers compared to standard airmail that gets handed off between national postal services. Those handoffs are usually where the delays happen, especially when the package hits a major transit hub like ISC New York or LAX. I've noticed packages that sit in one of those hubs for a week are almost always waiting on customs clearance rather than movement.
Packaging durability is another thing I've learned the hard way. International stuff travels a lot farther and goes through more sorting machines, so I always ask the sender to double-box or use extra padding. I've had a couple of envelopes show up crushed or torn because they weren't reinforced enough for the journey. Customs inspections add even more risk—once a package is opened for inspection, they often just tape it back up loosely, so a bit of internal reinforcement can save you from a mess inside.
Domestic shipping is a whole different beast though. If I need something fast, I'll pay the extra cost every time. Domestic priority mail can get to me in 2-3 days, and since it doesn't clear customs, there's no unpredictable hold. The trade-off is price—domestic is usually a bigger chunk of the total cost, but for time-sensitive stuff it's worth it. Overall, international is a gamble on speed, but 3 weeks is right in the sweet spot. I'd say plan for at least a month if you're ordering during peak times, and if you can't wait, domestic is the way to go.
