Using a temporary or disposable email address for vendor registration keeps your primary email address out of the vendor's contact database. Here is a practical overview of what temp email services work reliably and where they fall short.
What temp email accomplishes
A temporary email address allows you to receive registration confirmation and order notification emails without using an address tied to your real identity. If the vendor's contact database is ever compromised or sold, the exposed address leads nowhere.
It does not prevent the vendor from logging your IP address during registration or tracking your browser fingerprint. For IP-level privacy, a VPN or Tor is the relevant tool — a temp email only addresses the email address identifier specifically.
Reliable temp email options
Guerrilla Mail: provides a random @guerrillamail.com address, no registration required, inbox viewable for the session duration. Emails expire after a few hours. Works for immediate confirmation emails but not for ongoing order updates if you close the browser.
Temp Mail (temp-mail.org): similar functionality with a slightly longer retention period. The address and inbox persist for 24-48 hours after last access.
SimpleLogin and AnonAddy: forwarding services rather than temp addresses. These create aliases that forward to a real email you control, allowing you to receive ongoing order updates without exposing your real address. Require account setup but provide a durable alias for the order lifecycle.
Which to use
For orders where you need ongoing updates over weeks, a forwarding alias service is more practical than a pure temp address — you need to receive shipping notifications and tracking updates, not just the initial confirmation. For accounts where you want a genuinely disposable address and will monitor the inbox actively, Guerrilla Mail or Temp Mail work fine for the brief window.
For buyers who need to monitor a vendor inbox over a longer window than a typical temp mail address allows, some services offer paid persistent inbox options that maintain address continuity without requiring a full email account. These bridge the gap between single-use addresses and full email account creation. The right choice depends on how long you need the address to remain active and whether you expect ongoing communication after the initial order confirmation.
