Tracking number not working?

posted by jabahambo 9 months ago 733 views 3 comments

Vendor sent me a tracking number 2 days ago but when I check it on USPS it says "not found"

Is this normal? Should I wait longer or contact them?

If it's still not working after 3-4 days then ask the vendor about it

Yeah this happens all the time. The label gets created but not scanned in yet

Yeah, I've seen this question come up a lot. And honestly, it's pretty standard. Tracking numbers usually take 24–48 hours to actually show up in the system—sometimes a bit more if the courier is one of the slower ones. It's frustrating when you're waiting, but usually nothing's wrong.

From my experience, the courier choice really matters here. Some shops go with a faster international line—like DHL or FedEx—and the activation is quicker, maybe 12–24 hours. Others use a slower, more discreet option where the package just sits at the origin sorting hub for a day or two before the first scan even hits. That's totally normal. The transit hubs along the way—like the origin country's export hub, then a regional hub in your destination (e.g., Chicago, LA, Frankfurt, etc.)—that's where most of the delay happens. Once it clears those, tracking updates become way more frequent.

As for packaging durability, I've never had an issue. They usually wrap it tight in a few layers of plastic or a padded envelope, then a plain cardboard box. Customs? Sometimes the package gets held for an extra day, especially if it's scanned at a major customs hub. But more often than not, it passes through fine—just a routine check. Don't freak out if the tracking doesn't update for 2–3 days once it hits customs.

Overall, I'd say the first leg—from shipper to first hub—is the slowest part. After that, things move pretty consistently. If you're not seeing any updates after a couple of days, then yeah, I'd start to worry. But if it's only been a day, just give it another 24 hours, check again, and it'll likely pop up. No need to stress until it's been a full 48 hours with zero movement.
