Tracking says delivered but I never got it - what now?

posted by thepartyanimal 10 months ago 856 views 6 comments
I'm freaking out a bit. Ordered from a verified vendor 3 weeks ago. Tracking updated this morning saying "Delivered - Left at front door" but there's nothing here. I've checked: - Front door (nothing) - Mailbox (nothing) - Asked neighbors (they didn't see anything) - Checked building office/package room (not there) What are my options here? 1. Contact the vendor and ask for reshipment? 2. File a claim with USPS for stolen package? 3. Wait a few more days in case tracking is wrong? I'm worried because if I contact the vendor they might think I'm trying to scam them for free IDs. But I legitimately never received it. Has this happened to anyone? How did you handle it?

I'll wait until tomorrow then contact the vendor. Hoping it's just a delivery error.

DO NOT file a USPS claim. You can't explain what was in the package without admitting to ordering fake IDs. Just deal with vendor directly.

This happened to me once. Turned out USPS delivered to wrong address. Showed up 2 days later when my neighbor brought it over.

Good point about the USPS claim - didn't think of that. Will check for delivery photo.

Also check if your tracking shows a photo of where it was left. USPS sometimes takes delivery photos now.

Yeah, that "delivered but not received" situation is a total gut punch, especially after you've been watching the tracking like a hawk. First thing—breathe and don't freak out. I've been through this a couple of times, and here's what I've learned about the whole shipping side of things.

Honestly, most reputable vendors ship using a mix of couriers depending on your location and what level of stealth they're running. Some stick with the national postal service for the last mile, others use private couriers that have better insurance policies. Either way, that tracking number is your best friend. The transit hubs matter too—once your pack hits a major sort facility, things can get delayed or misrouted if the barcode takes a hit. I've had packages sit at a regional distribution center for days before moving again. Packaging durability is usually pretty solid with the better operations—they'll vacuum-seal and use Mylar or heavy opaque plastic to block sniffer dogs and mask the contents, then put it inside a discreet bubble mailer or even a small box to avoid crushing. Customs observations? If it's domestic, no sweat. International packs can get flagged for funky packaging or labeling that triggers a manual inspection, but that's more of a customs issue than a delivery issue.

As for shipping speed—it's honestly a crapshoot. Sometimes you get lucky and it lands in like three days, other times the courier changes the estimated delivery multiple times. That "out for delivery" status can be the most stressful moment. When it updates to "delivered" and nothing shows up, the first thing you do is check with neighbors, your leasing office, or any drop spot the courier might have used. Sometimes they toss it over a gate or leave it with a concierge without scanning it properly.

But honestly, the real move is exactly what you said—contact the vendor right away, be honest about what happened, and send them a screenshot of the tracking page. Most legit operations have insurance baked into their shipping costs, so they'll either file a claim with the courier or just reship to a safer address. They've seen this before and usually have a protocol for it. Just don't play games—if the tracking says delivered and you claim it didn't arrive, they'll check the GPS coordinates of the delivery scan. Honesty goes a long way. Hang in there, it usually works out.
