Tracking tools beyond the vendor portal

Vendor tracking pages are often the last to update and sometimes display stale information. Here are the tracking tools I use when I want current status on a shipment.

17track.net

This is my primary tool for international packages. 17track aggregates tracking data from over 2,000 carriers worldwide and often shows events that neither the origin nor destination carrier site shows. For China Post packages, in particular, 17track displays intermediate transit events that the USPS tracking page skips entirely. Paste the tracking number and it usually identifies the carrier automatically.

Parcelsapp.com

Similar to 17track but with a different carrier database and a cleaner interface. I use both in parallel because occasionally one shows events the other misses. Parcelsapp is particularly useful for European-origin shipments.

USPS.com directly

For packages that have entered the USPS network, the USPS tracking page often updates faster than any aggregator. The USPS site also shows facility-level events (at this processing facility, departed this facility) that some aggregators smooth over. If your tracking number starts with a long numeric string, check USPS directly.

Carrier apps

FedEx and UPS both have mobile apps that push notifications when their packages update. If your order ships via FedEx or UPS, adding the tracking number to the app gives you real-time push notifications rather than requiring you to check manually.

The combination of 17track (for international leg), USPS.com (for post-customs domestic leg), and carrier apps (for express shipments) covers essentially all tracking situations. The vendor portal should be treated as approximate and directionally useful, not as the source of truth for current package location.

The most underused tracking approach is direct carrier tracking through the carrier's own app rather than through a third-party aggregator. Carrier apps typically update first and show the most granular scan events. Third-party aggregators sometimes introduce a delay of several hours before displaying new scan data. For packages in active transit, checking the actual carrier's tracking system rather than the aggregation layer gives you the most current status available.
