UPS vs USPS for domestic package forwarding

If you're using a reshipping service or mail forwarding address, the domestic leg of your delivery is handled by whatever carrier the forwarding service uses. Most services default to USPS, but some offer UPS. Here's how they differ for this specific use case.

USPS domestic delivery

USPS Priority Mail is the most common option for domestic forwarding. It's fast (typically 1-3 business days within the continental US), well-tracked, and delivers to every residential address and PO box. The cost for a small envelope is $9 to $12 depending on weight and zones. USPS carriers are generally less scrutinizing than UPS about package contents — they deliver millions of personal mail pieces daily.

USPS also has the advantage of delivering to PO boxes and delivering to buildings where UPS requires a physical suite number. If your home address has any ambiguity, USPS tends to figure it out more reliably.

UPS domestic delivery

UPS is slightly faster for longer domestic distances and has more detailed real-time tracking. UPS Ground typically runs $8-15 for a small envelope. UPS does not deliver to PO boxes — you need a physical street address. UPS delivery drivers are more likely to require a signature for packages over certain values, which can complicate timing if you're not home.

One practical issue: UPS Access Point locations are an alternative if you miss a delivery, but they require you to bring photo ID to pick up the package. That creates an awkward situation if the reason you're using a forwarding service is to avoid direct connection to the delivery.

Which to use

For most reshipping situations, USPS Priority Mail is the better choice. It's flexible on address types, the carriers are less intrusive, and the tracking is sufficient. Use UPS if your forwarding service offers it and you're in a location where UPS consistently outperforms USPS on delivery reliability.
