USPS Parcel Select — what it is and when it appears

If you're using a reshipping service, you might see your domestic package shipped via USPS Parcel Select rather than Priority Mail. It's worth knowing what this means before your package starts moving.

What Parcel Select is

Parcel Select is a USPS commercial shipping product used primarily by high-volume shippers, consolidators, and logistics companies. It's significantly cheaper than Priority Mail — roughly 20-40% less — but slower and with less tracking detail. Transit times are typically 2 to 8 business days for domestic delivery, compared to 1-3 for Priority Mail.

Reshipping services that handle high volumes often use Parcel Select to keep their operating costs down and pass the savings to customers. You'll see it labeled as "USPS Parcel Select Ground" or "USPS Parcel Select Lightweight" on tracking.

How tracking works

Parcel Select tracking updates less frequently than Priority Mail. You'll typically see: accepted at origin, departed, and then delivered — fewer intermediate scans. Long gaps of 3-5 days with no tracking update are normal with Parcel Select and don't indicate a problem.

Don't compare Parcel Select tracking to the more detailed Priority Mail tracking you might be used to. The delivery network is different and scans happen at fewer points.

When to expect delivery

Parcel Select is slower but reliable. For non-urgent orders where you have a week's flexibility, it's fine. If your reshipping service offers both options and timing matters to you, paying the small premium for Priority Mail gives you faster and more visible delivery. If cost is the priority and you have time flexibility, Parcel Select does the job.

One practical note: Parcel Select packages are not eligible for free USPS package intercept (the service that redirects packages in transit). If you need to redirect a package after it's shipped, Priority Mail is the option to request from your reshipping service.
