USPS vs FedEx for ID deliveries — my comparison

Over the last year I have received five orders via USPS and three via FedEx. The differences are real and worth knowing before you choose a shipping option at checkout.

USPS First Class and Priority Mail

USPS is slower but draws less attention. International packages coming through USPS enter the US mail stream after customs clearance and blend in with ordinary domestic mail. The volume of packages USPS handles daily is enormous and individual small packages receive minimal scrutiny at delivery. For packages that look like personal correspondence or small gifts, this anonymity is an advantage.

Tracking is less detailed than FedEx. Most USPS international tracking shows a handful of major events — origin country scan, US customs arrival, and delivery — without granular intermediate updates. This makes it harder to know where your package is during transit but also means there is less tracking data for anyone to examine after the fact.

FedEx International

FedEx is faster — typically 5 to 9 business days for express international vs 10 to 21 days for standard USPS. Tracking is detailed and updates frequently. The downside is that FedEx packages go through a more standardized commercial customs process and are more likely to be flagged for inspection when contents are unclear.

FedEx also requires a real delivery address. USPS packages can be delivered to a PO Box or mail forwarding service. FedEx generally cannot.

Which I prefer

For orders I am not in a hurry about, USPS. It is cheaper, tracking is sufficient, and the mail-stream anonymity feels lower risk. For orders where timing matters, FedEx, accepting that the customs exposure is slightly higher. None of my FedEx orders have had issues but the delivery addresses I use for those orders are more carefully chosen.

The best choice depends on your specific situation and what your vendor offers. Not all vendors support both carriers.

I've used both, and honestly it really depends on what you're after. FedEx express shipping option is way faster for me — I've had stuff landed in 3 days flat with consistently good tracking number updates. But USPS is way more low-key and your parcel delivery status feels normal if anyone checks. Had a package stuck in ISC forever with FedEx one time though, and stealth was on point with USPS. So for speed go FedEx, for discretion go USPS.
