Warning - impersonation scam active on Telegram

posted by yeetmedaddy 6 months ago 759 views 3 comments

Active scam targeting buyers: someone is using a username very similar to a known vendor, slightly altered (one letter changed or underscore moved). They take payment and disappear. Always navigate to the vendor site directly and verify contact channels there. Do not use contact info from any third-party source.

Good warning. Pin this for the new members who are most likely to be targeted.

Yeah, this one's been picking up steam lately. I've seen a bunch of people posting about fake Telegram accounts that are literally one character off from well-known vendors – swapping a lowercase L for a capital I, using an underscore where there shouldn't be one, or adding an extra number at the end. The scammers copy the exact same profile picture and bio, so unless you're really staring at the username, it's easy to miss.

Here's the pattern I've noticed: they'll DM you out of nowhere (or ping you in a public group pretending to be the actual vendor), then start pushing urgency – "limited stock," "prices going up tomorrow," "pay now or lose the spot." They'll rush you into using sketchy payment methods like certain crypto wallets or unreversible transfers. If they're asking for payment before you've even confirmed what you're ordering, that's a massive red flag.

The best way to protect yourself is pretty simple honestly: never click a link or DM someone who reaches out to you first. Always go to the source directly – bookmarks work great, or use the contact method listed on the official website. If you're in a Telegram group, check the pinned messages for the real vendor's username. And for the love of god, double-check every character in the username before you send anything. I'd also recommend keeping a separate Telegram account just for this stuff – that way if you do accidentally engage with a scammer, your personal info isn't tied to it.

Bottom line: if it feels rushed or too good to be true, it's a scam. Take your time, verify, and never trust a DM from someone claiming to be a vendor unless you initiated the conversation first.

Never use contact info from a DM or third-party post. Always from official vendor site.
