During my first hold, the package sat for five days before releasing. The second time it was two days. In both cases there was no communication from DHL or CBP about why the package was held or what was examined.
DHL's customer service, if you call during a hold, will tell you only that it is with US Customs and they have no ability to expedite or get information about the examination. This is accurate — DHL has no control over CBP examination timelines.

USPS customs processing happens at international mail facilities and is generally less visible on tracking. Packages move through without a distinct "Customs hold" status in most cases. When USPS does hold a package, tracking simply goes silent for days, which is less informative than DHL's explicit status updates but feels less alarming.
