Zcash vs Monero for vendor privacy
Agreed, Monero's default privacy is hard to beat for vendor stuff. I've had customers mess up Zcash shielded addresses more than once, so XMR just removes that headache. That said, I still see people asking about paying with BTC because it's familiar—just remind them that bitcoin transaction ID is permanent and traceable, even if they're using a new vendor.
Also, solid call on escrow service safety. I always test with a small order first before trusting anyone with a group buy amount. Never again learning that lesson the hard way.
Honestly, for vendor privacy I’d lean Monero over Zcash—the shielded-by-default thing just saves you from user error. Zcash is fine if you’re disciplined, but transparen t addresses can trip you up. Also, if you’re dealing with a new vendor, look into escrow service safety before committing to anything. Paying with BTC feels easier but leaves that bitcoin transaction ID trail everywhere. I’d skip the exchange route too—don’t use Coinbase for this stuff. What kind of vendor are we talking?
Both Zcash and Monero are described as privacy coins, but they implement privacy very differently and the practical difference matters for vendor payments.
Monero's approach
Monero makes privacy mandatory. Every transaction uses ring signatures to obscure the sender, stealth addresses to obscure the receiver, and confidential transactions to hide the amount. There is no way to make a non-private Monero transaction. The entire network is opaque by default.
Zcash's approach
Zcash offers both transparent and shielded transactions. Transparent transactions are fully visible on the blockchain, identical to Bitcoin's transparency. Shielded transactions use zk-SNARKs cryptography to hide transaction details. The problem: most Zcash transactions — historically over 80 percent — are transparent, not shielded. The shielded pool is used by a minority of Zcash activity, which has privacy implications even for shielded transactions because you are interacting with a small pool.
Exchange availability
Zcash is listed on most major exchanges including Coinbase. Monero was delisted from several major exchanges in recent years due to regulatory pressure on privacy coin listings. Getting Monero requires either a non-KYC exchange, a peer-to-peer platform, or a swap service. This creates friction that Zcash does not have.
Which to use
If your vendor accepts Monero, use it. Monero's mandatory privacy is stronger in practice than Zcash's optional privacy, because there is no risk of accidentally making a transparent transaction. If your vendor accepts Zcash but not Monero, use shielded Zcash transactions (the z-addresses, not t-addresses) and verify that the vendor's receiving address is also a shielded address.
Using Zcash transparent addresses is only marginally better than Bitcoin from a privacy standpoint. The coin choice matters less than which transaction type you use.
One practical note: Monero is harder to acquire in some jurisdictions because several exchanges have delisted it under regulatory pressure, while ZCash remains available on most major platforms. For buyers who prioritize acquisition convenience over protocol-level guarantees, ZCash with z-addresses is more accessible even if Monero's privacy is structurally stronger. The better choice depends on whether obtaining the coin or using it privately is the harder step for your situation.
