Music venues range from all-ages shows to 21+ only events, and the enforcement varies enormously depending on the venue type, size, and what's being served. Here's a breakdown of what I've observed.
Large concert venues
Arenas and amphitheaters typically run all-ages or 18+ events with designated alcohol purchase zones that require ID verification separately from entry. The entry check is usually a wristband system — you show ID at an alcohol verification station and get a wristband, then present the wristband to purchase. The entry ID check for the show itself may not involve individual ID verification at all.
The alcohol verification stations at large venues are usually staffed by contract workers following a simple policy: check ID, verify age, issue wristband. Scanning is less common here than at dedicated bar venues because throughput matters — 20,000 people can't all wait for a barcode scan.
Mid-size music venues and clubs
The 500-2,000 capacity venues that have both a show floor and a bar are where ID checking is most consistent. These venues typically card everyone at the door regardless of apparent age. Scanning is more common at these venues than at large arenas. A stamp or wristband system distinguishes age groups.
Small venues and bars with live music
Neighborhood bars and small music venues vary the most. Some are extremely thorough; others barely glance at IDs, especially later in the evening when lines are shorter. The pattern depends more on the individual bouncer's standards and the venue's recent citation history than on any consistent policy.
Venues that have received ABC (Alcohol Beverage Control) violations for serving minors dramatically tighten their checking protocols for a period afterward and may invest in scanning equipment. Knowing a venue's recent compliance history is relevant context.
Music venues that recently received compliance warnings or violations have a documented period of heightened enforcement that typically runs three to six months. During this window, checking is stricter and more consistent than at baseline. Researching local news or permit board records for recent violations at a specific venue you plan to visit is publicly available information that gives you accurate current checking behavior rather than the outdated reputation the venue may have in online forums.
