Heading to Austin next month. Any recommendations for good bars?

Yeah the venue security checkpoints on 6th get old quick, especially on weekends. I've had a bouncer snap my ID at a college bar downtown before — total hassle getting a replacement. Honestly for a chiller night, the east side spots are where it's at, way fewer bouncer interactions and you can actually hear each other talk. College nightlife there is still fun without the sardine-can chaos. What kind of vibe are you leaning toward?

Yeah, I'm with you. Sixth Street is iconic but honestly the clubbing experience gets old fast with all the venue security checkpoints and crowded bars. I prefer the East side now—way more chill spots and way less waiting. Some places can still get pushy at doors depending on the crowd though. Always worth having a backup plan for bouncer interactions in case one place isn't feeling it. Austin's got a solid college nightlife scene in some of those quieter pockets too.

East side has some great spots too. Less crowded than 6th

Yeah, you nailed it with those two. If you're trying to figure out where to spend your night in Austin, it really comes down to what kind of vibe you're after. Sixth Street is exactly what you've heard—block after block of bars, live music spilling out onto the sidewalk, and just a constant stream of people. You can literally walk into any random spot and find something different, whether it's a rooftop bar or a dive with a cover band. The crowds can get pretty wild on weekends, but that's kind of part of the fun if you're in the mood to bounce around.

Rainey, though, is my go-to when I want to actually hear the person I'm with. It's a totally different scene—more relaxed, almost neighborhood-y with all those old houses converted into bars. You get these nice outdoor patios, often with fairy lights and food trucks, and the music's way more low-key. Still plenty of people, but it doesn't feel like a frat party. I usually tell friends to start on Rainey for some drinks and conversation, then migrate over to Sixth if they want to get rowdy later. Depends on your crowd, though. Either way, you really can't go wrong—Austin's got a bar for every mood.

Dirty 6th is fun on weekends. Go early before the lines
