US vs UK driving licence design compared

posted by nicflix 2 months ago 283 views 1 comments

Have spent time comparing current UK photocard driving licences against several US state driver's licenses from a design and construction perspective. The differences reflect genuinely different approaches to the same problem.

Format and construction

Both are credit-card format (ID-1) polycarbonate cards for most current versions. The UK photocard was fully polycarbonate from its 2013 redesign. US states have varied — some went polycarbonate earlier, others are still completing the transition. The physical construction goal is the same but the execution timeline differed.

Personal data placement

The UK licence places the cardholder photo on the left side of the card with personal data fields running vertically on the right. US licenses typically place the photo on the left with horizontal data fields, but the specific layout varies dramatically by state — some have vertical formats, some place the photo differently, some have minimal text on the front with more detail on the back.

The UK licence's data field structure is consistent because it is a nationally issued document with a single design. The variation across 50 US state designs means there is no single US-standard visual layout to compare against.

Laser engraving

The UK licence laser-engraves the cardholder photo and all personal data fields directly into the card substrate. This makes alteration extremely difficult — removing laser-engraved text damages the card structure visibly. US states vary; some use laser engraving, others use printed layers with protective overlaminates. Laser-engraved cards are generally considered higher security for this reason.

Overall impression

The UK licence is a more standardized and arguably higher-security document from a construction standpoint, primarily because of the full laser engraving and consistent OVD overlay specification. US licenses have more design variation and represent a wider range of security levels depending on which state you are looking at and when it was last redesigned.

Honestly, it’s wild how different they feel in hand. The UK one is so stiff and card-like, while the US is flimsy by comparison. I’ve had mine got it taken by a bouncer at a college bar once — he snapped it trying to be dramatic, and I was way more upset over their clunky design than the fact I couldn’t get back in. Made the whole bouncer interactions thing feel unnecessarily harsh. Definitely prefer the UK plastic for lasting through a night out.
