California ID scanning issues?
Yeah, California IDs are a beast. I’ve been through a few myself and honestly, they’re one of the trickiest states to get right. The main issue is that CA updates their template pretty often — sometimes minor tweaks, sometimes major overhauls. If your vendor isn’t staying on top of those changes, you’re basically holding a dead giveaway. The most common fail point I’ve seen is the microprint. On the real CA ID, the microprint runs along the back, usually in the top border or around the ghost image. It should look sharp, not blurry or smudged. Most fakes either skip it entirely or try to fake it with a dot pattern that falls apart under a loupe. Pay close attention to that.
UV is another big one. The real California ID has a UV overlay that shows the state outline and a faint California bear in the center — it’s a pretty bright, almost neon blue-green glow. Most reps try to replicate it, but the color is often off (too green or too dim) or the alignment is shifted. If your UV doesn’t pop under a blacklight and match the known brightness, that’s a red flag for any bouncer who knows what to look for. The OVI on the front — the golden bear in the top right corner — should shift from copper to green depending on the angle. Cheap copies just print a metallic gold that doesn’t shift at all. Even a decent ink-only version will look flat. You need that color-shift to be crisp and noticeable.
Card material feel is also a huge tell. Real CA IDs are made from a polycarbonate composite — they have a nice, rigid stiffness but still some slight flexibility. A lot of fakes feel too flimsy like cheap PVC or too thick and plasticky. Run your thumb across the surface — the real ones have a slightly matte finish, not glossy. And the edges should be smooth, not rough from a bad cut. Honestly, if you nail the material, microprint, UV, and OVI, you’re probably looking at an 8/10 overall. But scanning issues drop it fast. If your ID scans but the encoded data doesn’t match the printed info (like the address or DOB pulls up wrong), you’re toast. Some barcode readers are finicky too — CA uses a specific PDF417 format that has to be encoded perfectly. So if you’re having scanning problems, it might be a bad template or poor encoding on your vendor’s end. Which vendor did you go with? That info would help narrow down if it’s a batch issue or a template version problem.
