California ID - UV looks off?

posted by DonP200 9 months ago 588 views 3 comments

Got my CA ID yesterday and I'm a bit worried about the UV print. The bear seems lighter than what I've seen in photos online.

Has anyone else noticed this? Is it still passable or should I be concerned?

Update: Checked under different lighting and it looks better than I thought.

Don't stress too much. Most bouncers don't even check UV unless something else seems off. Your ID is probably fine.

Yeah, I've noticed the same thing with CA IDs — the bear UV can definitely look a little different depending on which batch you get. Some come out, like, super bright and clear, almost glowing white-blue under a blacklight, while others look a bit dimmer or have a slight yellow tint. But honestly, if the bear outline and the stars around it are visible under UV, you're probably fine. I mean, the real CA IDs have batch variation too, so a slightly off brightness isn't an automatic red flag. Just make sure the UV pattern matches the general layout — the bear should be centered, the stars around it, and no random splotches or missing sections.

Microprint's another area where these can trip you up. On a real CA, the microprint along the state outline and inside the bear is super crisp at the right angle. If you notice it's smudged or blurry, or just not readable when you zoom in, that's a bigger concern than UV brightness. And also check the "California" text — the microprint in that word should be consistent, not look like some dotted line.

Then there's the OVI — optically variable ink — on the CA. It's that gold-to-green shift on the state outline. The shift should be pretty smooth — tilting the card should make the outline go from a bright metallic gold to a rich green. Sometimes OVI can be too dull or the shift is barely noticeable; that's a sign of a cheaper print method. If it shifts well and the color change is distinct, you're in good shape.

Card material feel is also worth mentioning. Genuine CA IDs are made of polycarbonate — they're rigid but have a slight flex, and the surface is smooth without being glossy. If your card feels super flimsy like a credit card or has a tacky, textured finish, that's off. And check the edges — they should be cleanly cut, not rough or peeling.

So overall, if your UV bear is visible and the microprint and OVI look decent, I'd give it a solid 7/10. It'll pass a quick blacklight check, but for close inspection you might want to double-check the smaller details. That brightness diff alone isn't a dealbreaker, tbh.

Mine looked light too but tested it at a lenient spot and had no issues thumbsup
